Sutton Soccer - Demands of the Game
In order to succeed in the game of soccer, a player must be confident with a diverse set of skills and techniques. At Sutton Soccer, we provide players with the essential techniques that will serve as the foundation of their game. The “Core Skill Set” poster presents a list of these techniques – ranging from shielding to shooting to volleying. Equally important, however, is Sutton's drive to produce players that move beyond these basic skills to become proficient in all components of the game. Sutton Soccer defines the four main components of soccer as: Psychological, Physical, Technical , and Tactical .
I. Psychological Component
The Psychological component of soccer refers to the mental makeup of the player. Arguably the most important element of soccer, the psychological mindset of a player serves as the building block for the other three elements. Possessing traits such as discipline, composure, and confidence is the first step to progressing as a player. The focused environment promotes these traits.
II. Physical Component
In the demanding game of soccer, it is necessary that players have
the physical stamina to maintain a healthy mind and body. At Sutton,
the physical component of soccer is addressed through several different
avenues. Our drills have a physical component, mixing technical ball
work with tactical movement. Of course, the sheer repetition of drills
fosters endurance-building, as well.
III. Technical Element
The Technical aspect of soccer refers to the specific body movements
required to perform a skill. Among the most important
of these skills are dribbling, first touch control, and ball striking.
At Sutton, the technical component of soccer is addressed through
the use of our soccer machines that allow for numerous successful
repetitions.
IV. Tactical Element
The Tactical element refers to the decision making stage. Even when
a player is under pressure, he or she must be able to make good decisions.
At Sutton, the Tactical component of soccer is targeted with our
Action Light Game. During the Light Game,
players will recognize
the success they have when they play with their heads up, make quick
decisions, possess the ball, and communicate with their teammates.
Just as it is important to take hundreds of repetitions to perfect
a certain skill, it is equally important to take repetitions to perfect
decision-making skills.
"Becoming a skillful soccer player does not happen overnight, but comes from a steady progression of improving on ones own current level of skill."
